Stylist Spotlight: Marième on Fashion as a Journey

Stylist Spotlight: Marième on Fashion as a Journey

By Denise Ho

At Kitdo, we are endlessly inspired by the people who wear our pieces, and use them to transform their outfits into something uniquely their own. That’s why we were so thrilled to chat with Marième, a stylist and textile exploration artist and story teller whose work is a profound exploration of identity.

Kitdo: To start, could you tell us what you're wearing right now?

Marième: I am presently working, so I am wearing a draped black skirt layered with large black fleeted pants, a white oversized button up shirt topped with a black vest fitted at the waist to create a sort of silhouette look. I am wearing gold chunky jewelry and black veils.

Kitdo: With your incredible personal style, how would you describe the connection between your fashion choices and your personal identity?

Marième: My personal style is very connected to my personal identity — it is shaped by my cultural heritage, artistic interests and feelings. I inspire myself from a vast number of elements that have participated in shaping me as an individual, to translate them into garments, structures and looks that tell stories and act as a form of artistic expression. .

Kitdo: We admire how you approach getting dressed as a form of creative expression, almost like constructing a piece of wearable art. Could you walk us through how you build an outfit for a typical day?

Marième:  There are fundamental elements to the way I dress, that I base myself of every time I create a look — silhouette, layers, volume, structure, comfort and movement. Which ones I choose to prioritize will vary depending on the time if day I am about to have. I usually already have an idea of what want to wear, I allow myself to change a few things and experiment with the clothes I chose in order to build a look that I feel connected to and that represents me properly.

Kitdo: What do you believe is the fundamental key to developing a personal style that is not only unique but also a genuine reflection of one's identity?

Marième: Experimenting. I believe experimentation is the most important thing to do in the journey to finding personal style. Not being afraid to try new things, to be in the unknown, to give yourself grace and patience — personal style isn’t necessarily a destination, it’s a journey that you partake in to connect with fashion and discover how you can express yourself through it. Your personal style will change, it will shift, it will have great times and not so good times — and every single phase that you go through within that journey, will somehow represent you as an indivisual during that specific period of experimentation.

Kitdo: We love seeing you in Kitdo! Do you have a favorite look you've created with our pieces, or a go-to way of wearing them?

Marième: My Go-to way of wearing Kitdo is to use it as a draping tool. Instead of adding a safety pin, I like to add Kitdo — it brings a different feeling to the fabric and adds a bold and futuristic look.

A huge thank you to Marième for sharing her profound philosophy on style with us. Her perspective is a beautiful reminder that getting dressed is not a chore, but a daily opportunity for creative discovery.
